I wanted to share some thoughts that really captured my attention at one of our Bible Study meetings. I don't know if I related so much because of the season of life I'm in, or just because it's something that was incredible to think about.
The discussion was on Revelation chapter 4. It came up that so many of us are consumed with our own little world and if we have enough, do enough, make enough NOW. A lot of our happiness is based on the rewards we have today rather than what we are promised eternally. Then we looked at things in a different perspective to help shed light on where our focus should be.
1. Living Life - This begins in the womb. The womb is a place where we are being prepared for our Earthly or Terrestrial life. Here is where we get all the tools we'll need for living outside the womb. We'll practice breathing, muscle movement, even sucking! The baby goes through the motions of everything they'll need on the outside to thrive and grow.
"Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.'"
2. Terrestrial (Earth) Life - I know it sounds a little alien but when you think about it, that's what we are. We choose. Flesh or Spirit. Satan or God. Carnal or Eternal. That's what it all comes down to. So either we're an "alien" to God (Ephesians 2:12 ) or an alien to the world and it's ways (John 18:36, 1 Peter 2:10-12, John 8:22-24). "I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,"
~ Ecclesiastes 3:10-12
"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord." ~2 Corinthians 5-8
3. Heavenly/Celestial Life- This is our final phase, our "reward", what we were created for. The big Kahuna. ;-) "Then the King will say to those on His right hand, Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world" ~ Matthew 25:34
this is what we're supposed to be focused on, the end of our journey. But we get so wrapped up in this world, these times. And it's just a phase, it will pass away and we'll be born unto greater things. We need to use every moment here in growing & maturing in the Lord. Doing His Will, not ours. Ours just doesn't matter. 1 Corinthians 15:50-58
Another interesting thing mentioned was to think about how a baby perceives birth. It's a scary process for the baby, even if it's a gentle birth. The baby has NO idea where it's going, if it knew what death was I wonder if it would think it was dying. Birth is life but it is also death of a phase. As is heavenly life. It's death of our Earthly life but a birth of our eternal, heavenly life. I just found that comforting.
